LLB

Bachelor of Laws, popularly known as LLB, is a three-year undergraduate course that can be pursued only by graduates. Graduates from any field can opt for the course, which is offered in law colleges and universities across India. Students during this course are taught about Indian Penal Code (IPC) and various aspects of law.

At the end of the curriculum, they are given the choice of choosing civil or criminal law stream. LLB is qualifying degree for the practice of legal profession in India. After successfully completing three years of LLB course, one can get a license to practice as a lawyer in any court in India and can give legal advice.

Apart from practicing in courts at different levels, working as legal advisor to corporate houses is also a very lucrative career option in law. One can also set up his/her own firm for legal advice, after acquiring license for the same.

What does the LLB course lead to?

Following graduation, many students proceed to the vocational stage of legal training, either the Legal Practice Course towards becoming a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course for those wishing to progress to a career as a barrister. A significant number of law students pursue careers in business, finance, compliance, the police service and paralegal work.

Eligibility

The basic eligibility criteria for Bachelor of Laws admission is graduation. Candidates applying for this course should have completed their graduation. There is also a criterion for minimum marks required in graduation which may vary from institute to institute. Generally 45% marks in graduation are required for general category and 40% for reserved categories. There is no age limit for taking admission in this course.

Admissions are done either on the basis of marks in qualifying degree or through some entrance test. Students who are in final year of their graduation degree can also apply for entrance tests conducted for Bachelor of Laws admissions

What is the nature of work?

Equipped with a law degree and having completed the mandatory article-ship, a person can become either an advocate or a solicitor. There is a difference between the two. An advocate pleads in court and is actively involved in litigation. He decides what legislation and what precedents are relevant in a particular case.

Whereas, a solicitor offers legal advice to clients on a wide range of subjects, from personal to business matters. In the event of a case going to court, the solicitor briefs and advises the advocate who takes up the case on behalf of the client.

If one decides to become an advocate, he begins as a junior assistant to an advocate, performing routine jobs like filing, researching, securing adjournments and, of course, attending court with the senior. He gradually graduates to working on briefs and drafting plaints.

After several years of drafting experience, he begins to participate actively in court. In the case of the option to become a solicitor, one may join as a junior in a solicitor’s firm during the articleship, or while doing the law course. Here too, the junior job begins at routine runs like studying law cases, looking up authorities from time to time and filing suits and notices.

Depending upon how big or small the solicitor’s firm is, the junior may gain valuable experience in a wide range of matters, from labour laws and industrial disputes to taxation, under the guidance of his seniors.

Here too, after several years of experience, he may raise to the level of a senior and may eventually be invited to join as one of the partners of the firm.

What to do after LLB?

While during the final year of the course most of the law graduate begins to work as apprenticeship. After two years of experience as a apprenticeship he/she can take an examination conducted by Law Society and can works a articled clerk.

One can work under a prominent advocate and with several years of experience one can able to do his own practice. And also there is opportunity to work with the corporate firm. One who want to continue there studies can opt for LLM or else can do MBA.

Opt LLM if you are interested in the teaching profession and go for MBA if you need flexibility across sectors and good experience with corporate.
