Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralised test for admission to 21 National Law Universities in India. 43 other education institutes and two public sector institutes are also eligible to use these scores.

The test is conducted by the 21 participating law schools in rotation, in the order of their establishment, starting with National Law School of India University which conducted CLAT, And now up to National Law University Odisha which conducted the Last CLAT. The test is taken after the Higher Secondary Examination or the 12th grade for admission to integrate under graduation programs in Law and after Graduation in Law for Master of Laws (LL.M) programmes conducted by these law universities.

The two-hour admission test consists of objective type covering questions on Elementary Mathematics or Numerical Ability, English with Comprehension, General knowledge and Current affairs, Legal Aptitude and Legal Awareness and Logical reasoning.

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national level entrance exam conducted for admission to 21 prominent National Law Universities in India and other private universities. One who qualifies in CLAT can seek admission in 3-year/5-year Integrated LLB and LLM programmes.

The CLAT exam is conducted once in a year by the National Law University (NLU) among the 21 members NLUs of the CLAT Committee. The CLAT scores are used by other private law colleges across the country and Public Sector Undertakings for admissions and recruitment respectively.

Till 2018, CLAT was conducted on a rotation basis by NLUs. However, from 2019 onwards the CLAT will be conducted by a permanent body, ”Consortium of NLUs” formed by NLUs. The body has its headquarters at NLSIU Bangalore.

For CLAT UG Program

  • Age Limit: Candidates who are above 20 years of age in case of UR/NRI/NRI Sponsored category and above 22 years of age in case of SC/ST/OBC/SAP category as on 1st July 2018 are eligible
  • Academic Qualification: Candidate must have passed 10+2 or any equivalent examination

For CLAT PG Program

  • Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for the candidates appearing in CLAT 2021 to pursue post-graduate programs. Thus, candidates of all ages are eligible
  • Academic Qualification: Candidate must have an LLB or any other equivalent degree

Syllabus for PG Course

Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence will both have an equal weightage of 50 marks each in the question paper. Whereas, the rest of the questions will be coming from different topics like Criminal law, International Law, etc. The details regarding Constitutional law and Jurisprudence is given below for reference:

Exam Pattern

CLAT exam pattern is set differently for both LLB and LLM programs. NUALS Kochi will hold the exam in May 2021. CLAT Exam Pattern has not seen any major changes over the past few years.

  • Number of Sections: In LLB – 5 Sections and In LLM – 3 sections
  • Nature of Questions: Objective type (MCQs)
  • Total Questions: 200 Questions in LLB and 150 Questions in LLM
  • Marking Scheme: 1 mark of each question
  • Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for a wrong answer

Key Points of CLAT Cut-off’s

  • This year CLAT Cut off is expected to increase by 5% – 10%. The cut off of CLAT 2019 is expected to release in the last week of May 2019
  • NLUs will release separate cut offs for each program as per a candidate’s category
  • Candidates qualifying the minimum cut off for CLAT can participate in the centralized CLAT Counselling
  • Counselling Process is conducted in four rounds and CLAT Seat Allotment is done on merit-cum-preference basis

Counselling Process

  • CLAT Counselling starts from 1st week of June and will get over by 29th June,
  • Candidate must indicate their NLUs preference online where they want to take admission
  • There will be a centralized admission process for CLAT and admission will be done on the basis of merit-cum-preference
  • Candidates have to deposit INR 50,000 for securing allotted seat during counselling procedure
