About Fergusson College Pune

Fergusson College was founded by the Deccan Education Society in 1885 in Pune. The college received the status of College of Excellence in 2017 and Special Heritage Status in 2014 by UGC. It is an autonomous college and is affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

It has been named after Sir James Fergusson, then Governor of Bombay, who took a keen interest in the development of the New English School as well as the Fergusson College and was the first patron of the Deccan Education Society.

It was inaugurated on 2nd January, 1885 by William Wordsworth. Fergusson College is also called as DES Shri. Navalmal Firodia Law College (DES SNFLC).

Admission Process

• Applications for admission to Fergusson College have to be submitted online.
• Applicants who have appeared for Higher Secondary Examinations in Science/ Arts/ Commerce are eligible for admissions to various undergraduate courses.
• Admission to all the UG courses will be merit-based as per the rules of the university.
• For other universities students, candidates will be selected purely on the basis of entrance examination.

For UG Courses:

• Select Applications link at the home page.
• Register with valid email id and phone number.
• Log in with the credentials received after successful registration.
• Upload scanned copies of photograph and signature.
• Proceed to pay the application fee.
• Application fee for UG courses is INR 50, for each course.
• Application fee has to be submitted online only (Net Banking/ Credit/ Debit cards).

Awards and rankings

In 2004, Fergusson College was awarded an ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The College also received the “Best College Award” of the colleges affiliated to the University of Pune in the academic year 2004–2005.

College has also gotten ‘A'(Equivalent to “A+” grade in the current scheme) grade with CGPA 3.26 in NAAC second cycle reaccreditation in year 2010 and again gotten ‘A'(Equivalent to “A++” grade in current scheme) grade with CGPA 3.62 in NAAC third cycle in the year 2015.

It has also received national heritage status, College of Excellence by (UGC) award and it is part of DBT STAR College Scheme.

Fergusson College has ranked in the top ten arts and science colleges in India for the past 16 years in the annual survey conducted by India Today-AC Nielsen-ORG-MARG and published in India Today magazine. In the state of Maharashtra, it is consistently ranked first in science and arts, followed by St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.

Moot Court Activities

Moot Court activity is an inherent feature of every premier Law School to create eloquent Advocates this activity is greatly promoted by the college.

The students have brought several laurels to the College by winning prizes at different competitions country-wide in International, National, and State Level Prestigious Moot Court Competition, Client Counseling, and Mock Trials.

Placement Cell Report

Besides giving quality education, the college also endeavors to make students enthusiastic and optimistic about the profession by a systematic process and activity driven approach like encouraging the students to participate in various research-based activities which help them acquire in-depth knowledge in various fields, articulation of thoughts on various issues at hand, working with team spirit and time management.

At the very beginning of the semester, the placement cell had organized a session Career Options and Career Facilitation In Law.. by Ms. Nandini S. Kotharkar asst. Professor and coordinator Industry Institute Interaction Cell. DES’s Fergusson College, Pune.

The outcome of the session was that the students were benefited from the knowledge shared that there are many opportunities in law at the service industry.
